Safety Inspection Requirements

Vehicles registered in Utah are required to have an inspection, prior to registration, based on the model year of the vehicle. Vehicles older than eight years old are required to receive an inspection every year. Vehicles newer than eight years old are required to have an inspection every other year. Vehicles in even numbered model years are required to have inspections in even years and odd numbered model years are required in odd years. The chart below shows when vehicles are required to be inspected. Utah base plated Commercial Motor Vehicles, CMV's, are required to have an inspection yearly to meet Federal requirements, 49 CFR 396.17.

Safety Inspection is required by Utah law to investigate all complaints regarding state inspections. If you have questions regarding an inspection please contact the Safety Inspection office at (801) 965-4889, option 1. Action will be taken against any station that attempts to pass vehicles in violation of Safety Inspection rules. Safety Inspection also investigates complaints regarding unnecessary repairs.
